Driving Change: Oxford EARTH mentioned in the Vice-Chancellor's Oration 2025

The University of Oxford’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Irene Tracey, delivered her annual Oration to the University in the Sheldonian Theatre, in which she celebrated the breadth and brilliance of Oxford’s research community.

Oxford EARTH has been honoured to be highlighted in her speech for our mission of addressing “issues of equity and social licence when extracting the natural resources required for the net zero transition.” This recognition underscores the programme’s commitment to tackling global challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Among our contributors is Professor Chris Ballentine from Earth Sciences were also mentioned for his team's research into finding pathways to natural clean hydrogen - a potential cornerstone of the future energy landscape.

As Professor Tracey affirmed: “Planet-scale problems need planet-scale solutions. So how are our researchers helping? Brilliantly, of course.”

Oxford EARTH  proudly embodies this ethos as we develop solutions that are both scientifically rigorous and socially responsible.
