Oxford EARTH experts publish their thoughts on the UK's Critical Minerals Strategy in The Conversation UK.

The UK Government published its second Critical Minerals Strategy on 23 November 2025. This was motivated by recognition that a “a new approach” is required, given that critical minerals are foundational to the “government’s mission of stimulating long-term economic growth” [UK Gov't Critical Minerals Strategy, Nov 2025].

In light of the renewed national focus on critical minerals, Oxford EARTH experts have released an article in The Conversation UK addressing the UK’s acute need for critical minerals and the challenges faced.

In this collaborative piece, Prof Michael Kendall, Dr Caitlin McElroy and, Prof Jon Blundy, outline why meeting the UK’s critical mineral requirements will demand a fundamental shift in how we understand and manage these resources. They explore the changes needed across exploration, recovery, recycling, and substitution.

This article underscores the mission of Oxford EARTH and reinforces the necessity for innovative solutions, highlighting the scale of the challenges associated with sustainable and equitable natural resource management.
